Blitz's opening game of the season ended in a 34-20 defeat at the hands of UWE Bullets last Sunday. Blitz who had a large number of rookies starting this season in place of those graduated last season started well defensively led by new defensive captain Gatis Kozlovskis and held the Bullets opening drive to a punt. The Blitz's new look offense with Nick Wilson-Town starting at quarterback struggled to move the ball and suffered a sack and then a fumble which was recovered by the Bullets.

The Blitz defense came to the field with Bullets in great field position and despite a good effort failed to prevent them scoring the touchdown which was followed by a successful two point conversion. The Blitz continued to find problems against the continous blitzing of the Bullets linebackers but some hard running by rookies Tom Lloyd Jones and Jamie McGrory got the Blitz moving the ball a bit more effectively. Blitz gave up another score when the Bullets quarterback connected with a big pass to his receiver giving the Bullets a 14-0 lead.

An almost identical play gave the Bullets perfect field position which led to another touchdown for the Bullets putting Blitz 20-0 down before half time. The Blitz offense struggled again to move the ball and were forced to punt which provided a highly contested moment. After calling a fair catch the Bullets punt returner muffed the catch and rookie Rob Mallia ran it back for a touchdown. At halftime Blitz were down 20-6.

Things didn't get any better for Blitz at the start of the 3rd quarter with the Bullets scoring another rushing touchdown early on and they added the PAT to put them 27-6 up. Blitz continued to make things hard for themselves with another fumble on the following drive which was recovered by Bullets. The Blitz defence did well to stop the Bullets and a big tackle in the backfield by club captain Lydon Ward-Best put Bullets fourth and long. It was all in vain though as the Bullets quarterback made another big pass for a touchdown, Bullets tagged on the PAT to go 34-6 up.

With the game already over the Blitz refused to give up and with the support of the Plymouth Storm cheerleaders they started to fight back. Grant Phillips-Tebb in at quarterback connected with rookie Charlie Eldridge for a big pass as Blitz started to establish a passing game. In the fourth quarter with the Bullets resting some of their starters, the Blitz took advantage. Phillips-Tebb continued to connect with Eldridge and after a touchdown pass to Lloyd-Jones was called back Eldridge caught his first Blitz touchdown and closed the score down to 34-14. The defense started to put pressure on the Bullets quarterback after the kick off and sacks from James Ogier and James Bell forced Bullets to punt. The next drive saw Phillips-Tebb and Eldridge connect once again to put Blitz 1st and goal which led to McGrory running the ball down the middle for his first Blitz touchdown making the score 34-20.

It wasn't the start that Blitz were hoping for but there are a lot of lessons to be learnt from a game. Plymouth Blitz's next game is away to Bath Killer Bees on the 28th November and Blitz will hope to get their first win of the season.
