Blitz announce GB Player

McGowan

Plymouth Blitz are proud to announce wide receiver Mark McGowan as a 2005/06 Southern All-Star Wildcat and Great Britain player. He joins Dan McMillan who also played for the Great Britain Bulldogs, and Fred Walker (TE), James Burt (OL), Greg Piggott (QB) and Steve Davey (OL), Blitz players who also played for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats play the Cougars on 8th April in Derby, while the Bulldogs have two games scheduled against Team USA and Team Canadain June and July. In August they fly out to Los Angeles to play two college teams.

Mark was selected after attending BCAFL’s new two day camp held at Warwick University over the weekend of 17th and18th December 2005, consisting of 5 field practices and additional classroom sessions.

The camp encompassed primary selection for the North and South All-Star teams and the 2005/06 Bulldogs team, giving a longer period of time for players and coaches to prepare.

Mark, in his forth year as wide receiver for the Blitz, said ‘I would just like to thank God and thank you to everyone who helped me get to the level I’m at today, and I hope they can continue to help me improve my game’

Plymouth Blitz at Bristol Bullets

Sunday 11th December 2005

The Blitz entered the game at Bristol eager to show that the first week performance against the Bullets was a fluke.

The game started at a high pace but both teams first drives came to nought. However Bristol then broke though for the opening score with the PAT being successful. The score remained 7-0 until half time in a keenly fought rivalry match up with no shortage of effort.

However on their opening drive of the 3rd quarter the Bullets extended their lead to 14 points. The score remained the same through the beginning of the 4th quarter where the Bullets gave the scoreboard a rather lop-sided look with a further 3 Touchdowns leading to a score of 34-0. However the Blitz fell short in their final attempt to get on the scoreboard.

Steve Bentley was named offensive MVP for a fine all-round performance. Craig Amos was named defensive MVP for a fine defensive effort including an interception. On special teams long snapper Rob Bloodworth was named MVP.

Plymouth Blitz at Reading Knights

Sunday 27th November 2005

With both teams entering this game winless in the season this match was always going to be close.

The Blitz took an early lead on a 34 yd Nick Copley run on the Blitz’s first play from scrimmage. Instead of taking the PAT the Blitz got the ball back in the end-zone for a 2PAT courtesy of a HB pass from JR Henderson to Marco Pinder. However the lead was short-lived as the Knights struck back soon after with the 2PAT being converted to leave the scores tied at 8-8.

The game remained tight into the third quarter when the introduction of QB Andy Daultrey into the Plymouth offence worked with immediate effect as he hit Tom Hard on a 44yd catch and run to regain the lead for the Blitz. The Blitz added to this with a 4yd Nick Copley run, which seemed to give the Blitz the win at 20-8.

However the Knights refused to be beaten and went down the other end to score a TD which was not converted to leave the score 20-14. Despite the final few nerve-wracking minutes the Blitz held on to claim their first win this season and continue an unbeaten record against the Knights.

As part of a fine Defensive effort Damien Martin was named defensive MVP with Nick Copley offensive MVP to go with his superb 168yd rushing effort. The Blitz go into their bye week full of optimism and looking for revenge in their next game against rivals Bristol.

Plymouth Blitz  at Bath Killer Bees

Sunday 20th November 2005

With both teams looking to make up for opening day losses this was always going to be a chance for both to fight back and prove themselves.

The Killer Bees came out firing in the first quarter with 2 rushing TD’s against a fired up Blitz defence, which led to a quick 15-0 advantage. However the Blitz defence then came into its own with some fine work leading to Bath having to punt the ball away on numerous occasions.

However the Blitz offence never really clicked on a drive despite several moments when they held the upper hand. However as the fourth quarter began the score was still 15-0 and the Killer Bees finally broke through where the Blitz were unable to and scored two further touchdowns with the aid of some questionable refereeing decisions.

With nothing left to lose the Blitz offence came back out looking to put a score on the board but were turned over which led to a Killer Bee Field Goal which completed the scoring at 32-0 in favour of the home team. Nick Copley was named offensive MVP for the Blitz for his fine rushing efforts and Ross Hamer was named defensive MVP for his run stopping.

The 1-1 Killer Bees move on to face local rivals Bristol whilst the 0-2 Blitz travel to Reading next week looking to Kick-start their season.

Bristol Bullets at Plymouth Blitz

Sunday 13th November 2005

With this match between two fierce rivals in the Blitz and Bristol Bullets also being both teams opening match, there was nothing to lose for either team.

The Blitz won the toss and chose to Kick-Off. However not all went as planned as the Bullets KR returned the kick-off all the way back for a TD. Once the Blitz offence got on the field they too showed that moving the ball was no problem however the drive stalled with nothing to show for it.

The Bullets offence showed that there was no problem with their offence as they moved the ball well against an inexperienced Blitz defence and in doing so rammed home their advantage scoring two more TD’s in the first quarter and a further two before half-time.

With a renewed effort the Blitz offence showed that moving the ball wasn’t a problem as QB Andy Daultrey connected first with Tom Hard and then with Mark McGowan on a 43-yard TD pass. For the next couple of drives the Blitz threatened to get back into the game before the Bullets connected for a further two TD’s in both the third and fourth quarter.

Offensive MVP went to Nick Copley and Defensive MVP went to Marco Pinder. The Bullets move on to face Hertfordshire with the Blitz up next at Bath.
